Folgers

The infamous Folgers coffee commercials date back to the 1980s and are best known for their famed slogan, “the best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup.” This commercial from the 90s uses the appealing phrase along with a catchy song to draw its readers in. Folgers company tries to appeal to consumers’ pathos when they show the woman peacefully waking up to a hot cup of coffee. Folgers makes use of language with the upbeat, likable melody and rhythm of the song that makes this commercial memorable. The lyrics of the song also rhyme further creating a feeling of joy while to consumer watches. With use of the song Folgers is able to subtly fit in their logic that Folgers coffee is the best and only choice for bright and early mornings. The consumer is meant to feel if they drink this coffee they will be as energized as the dancers in the commercial. The advertisement also flashes rapidly between images of a woman dancing and drinking coffee which captivates the watchers attention. The commercial starts out in the morning with the setting rather dark and the tempo of the song is slow. As the commercial goes on the tempo rises and the setting gets progressively brighter. This growth in light symbolizes the effects the coffee will have on its consumers. The more they drink the more energy they will have to participate in the everyday activities of life. All of these subliminal messages communicate the idea that Folgers coffee brings joy and vigor to its consumers lives.

"Simple Man" Lynyrd Skynyrd

What makes Lynyrd Skynyrd one of the most influential bands of all time is the timeless message they communicate through their music. Despite all their fame and fortune, the band remains as down to earth and as simple as the common man. Accordingly, they use language and structure to sing about the troubles and victories of the common man’s life. Their song simple man clearly displays this message:

Mama told me when I was young, Come sit beside me, my only son And listen closely to what I say. And if you do this It will help you some sunny day Take your time... dont live too fast,Troubles will come and they will pass. Go find a woman and youll find love, And dont forget son, There is someone up above.(chorus)And be a simple kind of man. Be something you love and understand.Be a simple kind of man.Wont you do this for me son,If you can? Forget your lust for the rich mans gold All that you need is in your soul,And you can do this if you try.All that I want for you my son, Is to be satisfied.(chorus)Boy, dont you worry... youll find yourself.Follow you heart and nothing else. And you can do this if you try.All I want for you my son,Is to be satisfied.

In a world and society so engulfed in consumerism and a desire to constantly get bigger and better, the message of “Simple Man” hits very close to home. The song talks about the importance of not filling our lives with meaningless junk, not only physically but emotionally. It says “Forget your lust for the rich man’s gold, all you need is in your soul” for in the end all those trivial things will not satisfy our hearts, they will only bring us further away from discovering our real selves. The artist uses short fragmented phrases with only four or five syllables “go find a woman, you’ll find love,” and adds pauses between them to slow down the pace of the song and draw the listener in on his message. However he hits a long note when he repeats the chorus, “be a simple kind of man,” to emphasize the words. He also chooses straightforward diction and employs rhyme “take your time don’t live too fast, troubles will come and they will pass.” to establish a lyrical sound that allows the song to flow with ease. We will never be satisfied until we clear out the clutter in our lives so that we can realize what is really important and find a purpose. “Boy don’t worry.. you’ll find yourself. Follow your heart and nothing else.” This timeless message proves Lynyrd Skynyrd not only to be one of the most talented music groups of all time, but also one of the most influential songwriters and positive examples of how we should live our lives.

Villanelle

All good things must come to an end
The sunset fades as we approach the night
Who knows what awaits around the bend

All the announcements we must send
The horizon looks to be bright
All good things must come to an end

Torn friendships we must mend
Time is too short to fight
Who knows what awaits around the bend

Tears of sadness and joy seem to be the trend
But we won't cry cause we know we did it right
All good things must come to an end

Into new places we all will blend
Each with our own shining light
Who knows what awaits around the bend

In a new world we must fend
Never forgetting this short flight
All good things must come to an end
Who knows what awaits around the bend.

Deception.

The mermaid's chest fluttered with fear
As the essence of Calvin Klein came too near
The dark coolwater motioned her in
as she was blinded by his aqua chrome fin

Mighty mauve were her cheeks when he entered the room
It was Romeo and Juliet under the luminous moon
She described his lips as a red velvet touch
His Ferrari black hair, it was just too much

As he taxied by her heartbeat flew
oblivion took over as he worked his voodoo
Always say no, her friends would mention
He was a one man show, no contradiction

Sitting in a corner in the black cafe,
just thinking and picking at her peach parfait,
Still recovering from last nights kiss
something blue came to mind, he was so missed

Then through the dark lights she saw something new
The silver ice hair accompanied by who?
Lost in his chapel of love he reached for her face
Over the sandalwood table in which they both embraced

A flash of fuscia surfaced her skin
diesel fuel flew through her, spreading her thin
She stood up making fists walking towards the couple
They'll think I’m only a waitress and won't cause any trouble

The fight in her head raged as she threw the water

messing up the room as if it were Pearl Harbor
She re-loaded the gun and let him have it again,

She would be mad for today,
But tomorrow she would give in...
